Just wrote about them, and here they are, Uriah Heep in India, again!!!

Machaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan! I screamed to my friend in Bangalore as I called to tell him about Uriah Heep's concert in Bangalore on the 8'th of next month. I had just written about Heep's historic concert at I.I.T, Madras in 1983 and I couldn't believe it when I went to their site for some information only to discover that they are playing at Palace Grounds next month. Tickets go on sale from Friday the 27'th onwards. Check the site.

Uriah Heep's concert in Bangalore

On the band's site it also says that one of their members Goalby, was attacked and bitten onstage during the concert in Banglaore for which he had to take shots for Rabies. Check the link to find out.

Uriah Heep's 1983 concert in Bangalore

A Revelation!!!

Question: Which is the biggest rock band/act to have played inside the campus of an Univertsity or College in India?
Answer: If you said Uriah Heep, I.I.T, Madras then I'll call you one true rock fan. But chances are that a) You live in or around I.I.T Madras. b) You are a resident of Chennai c) You are a die-hard hard rock fan. d) You are a "Heepster", a die-hard fan of Uriah Heep (so what's the big deal with the options? I just wrote them anyway.)

Now that I.I.T's annual cultural fest "Saarang" is on I though it would only be apt to mention about the biggest rock event that took place here in Chennai many years ago.

The year was 1983 and the month, October. The event took place at the O.A.T (Open Air Theatre), the venue of a countless concerts, cultural events, rock shows, movies, school events, you name it. I learn from Uriah Heep's website that the band also played at Bombay, Bangalore, New Delhi and Calcutta that year but I doubt if it was played at a college/university venue.

Heep were in their prime. A very big act in rock and heavy metal with a huge and growing fan following around the world. Their popularity rivaled and beaten only by bands such as their close relative, Deep Purple. In fact if you guessed why their earlier sound, sounded very much like Deep Purple it was because these guys were practicing (for a while) in the same building where DP were practicing their hits. (Source: Inner sleeve notes of the 30'th Anniversary of DP's classic "In Rock" CD)

Hits like "Gypsy Queen", "Take a look at yourself", "Firefly", "July Morning", and "The Wizard" would only convert first time listeners into loyal fans. Any avid rock fan of the 80's will remember "The Dance", the staple of rock bands playing competitions in the city in the mid 80's.

But hold on. Here's something I stumbled into that blew my mind while searching for info about Uriah Heep's I.I.T concert. I chanced upon this quiz on Kamal Hassan where I discovered something incredible. Remember the tamil movie "Kalayana Raman" starring Kamal Hassan and Sridevi and the hit song "Aaaha vandidichu, aasayil odi vanthaen...."? The song begins with an "Enhaaa, Enhaaa, Enhae, Haaanh, Enha, Haaanh" which is exactly what is sung in Uriah Heep's song "Lady in Black" from their 1971 album "Salisbury".

I am not implying that Illayaraja lifted a tune but someone related to or associated with Illayaraja did. How else can such a tune be lifted off a song? The chances are one in a million or maybe a zillion.

I regret I didn't go to the concert. I was still in school then and months away from giving my Matriculation exams. I remember stopping at the O.A.T to watch the Goliath of a set being built as I rode back home after school. Tickets for the concert sold for just Rs.10/-. A friend who went to the concert said it was excessively loud that she had to cup her hears frequently to listen to the deafening sound. Her brother told me that lead guitarist Mick Box got so high that he started playing his guitar with the pots lined up there for decoration. I truly missed them and also missed being a part of history

Having written that, here's another question. Who else do you think were a bigger act than Uriah Heep to visit Chennai, or was there a bigger act? Was it Osibisa (in the 70's?) or Jethrotull (1991) or MLTR (2000). I am sure you have your own favorites but in my opinion there WAS one such band. In my opinion they were the best ever. I'll leave that discussion for another post. Till then let me keep you guessing. I'll leave you with some clues though. This band were one of those great bands that lived most of their lives in anonymity. However their contribution to rock music were collossal. When they played here in Chennai they toured with "The Boomtown Rats". Yes, the very same band fronted by Bob Geldof. Bob Geldorf would later go on to concieve 1985's "Live Aid" and also be involved with Live 8 in 2005. I am not sure if Bob Geldorf was in the band then but Boomtown Rats WAS his band and they DID come here.

Kissing in Indian Ads?

Yes and it's on TV. Next time you watch TV and if you catch Chevrolet's new luxury car advertisement, don't impatiently change channels. It happens towards the end of the ad. and it lasts for a fraction of a second. Not a steamy one but a gentle one on the lips.

Smooching cannot be far behind. Coming soon to a TV near you.

Greed Moves America? It moves Indians too. Part II

It has hardly been two weeks since I posted an article on that notorious chain mail and I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a similar mail in my inbox at work today. We almost had a blast. Sri promptly replied to his sender with "HAAAAA HAAAAA HAAAAA's and HOOOOOO HOOOOO HOOOOO's". Others were curious and someone called to attention the article on my blog too. However in this chain mail the guys from Cognizant simply ruled. There could have been a hundred or more e-mail id's and names. Cap Gemini and others were there too. One thing that was common between the mail that I previously posted on the blog and this one was the false affirmations of those who claimed they got the money. The rest were different senders. I am not reproducing the mail here for two reasons. 1. To avoid wasting storage space and 2. Most important, to save that "anonymous" commenter on my previous blog a heart attack. I am sure this chain mail is going to be around for another five years or more or as long as the stupidy and greed lasts. What a shame!

To read my first article on this chain mail click the link below.

I have a few words with Kushboo

We are lucky whenever we go out with my sister. We happen to meet some celebrity or the other. Who would have expected Kushboo to turn up at Man Mandir, the saree showroom today. She was there shopping with her children. By then we had almost finished our shopping and were almost leaving. As we got up to go I remembered that I had posted an article on Kushboo on my blog and I thought I would tell her about same. Kushboo was on and off on her mobile and as I walked up to her she was almost dialing another number and she didn't notice me beside her. "Kushboo" I called and she instantly turned towards me discontinuing all work on her mobile. "I am Subash and I have written about you on my blog", I said. She briskly responded saying she would read it. "It's called subashsworld@blogspot.com" I continued. "I will, when I find time" she said politely. My mind was telling me, "Dumbo it's subashsworld.blogspot.com and not subashsworld@blogspot.com", but it looked as though she had run out of time for me. I didn't try and correct what I just said to her. As we parted I said my final words, "I stand by whatever you said" and held my thumbs up in appreciation of her. Kushboo responded with a pleasant "Thank You."

I recall, while at college, the infamous Farah-Kushboo kiss photograph on the cover of India Today that ran an article of the upcoming talent of young stars taking over Bollywood. I didn't know then that one day I would talk to her. Khushboo has come a long way, been through several trials and tribulations and finally become a successful person. A talented and a brave woman she has triumphed against several odds. As K Balachander once put it she is capable of a lot more and that her true potential still remains untapped.

If you have high Triglycerides in your blood

Like me if you are in your mid to late 30's I strongly advise you to take a Lipid profile of your blood and check for your Cholestrol (HDL/LDL)and Triglyceride (TGL) levels. For the first time in my life I had some severe bouts of dizziness and had to take off from work. It remained for almost two weeks and more. Though the feeling subsided I must tell you that it is certainly not a pleasant thing to happen. After consulting a doctor I first checked my neck for cervical spondylitis as the doc said my too much staring of the monitor while at work and at home without adequate exercise might have caused the dizzy feeling. It wasn't a problem of spondylitis. I then followed this with an ECG and a chest X-ray with a subsequent visit to the cardiologist. Nothing was wrong with my heart either. I continued to take my medication for the dizziness though the dosage was reduced.

I then recalled what my mother-in-law had asked me to do. Check my ear. I had dismissed that as rubbish only to recall later that the middle ear was responsible for the balance of the body after all. I did some searching on the net and located an ENT specialist in Chennai who was also an expert at treating giddiness. He first cleaned my ears and asked me to take an exhaustive blood test. This was followed by an audiology exam and then the ENG where giddiness is induced in the body and the body's reaction to it monitored. All these exams turned normal. But then where was the problem? The culprit - High Triglycerides in my blood. If you have anything above 150 mg/dl you can expect all kinds of trouble in your body including vertigo. Mine was at 200 mg/dl, already in the High range. As they say Vertigo is only a symptom and not a problem or a disease. I was given tablets to keep my TGL levels under check. I was then told to be catious of my diet like staying away from fatty and fried foods as the problem could recur if I were careless about stuff I am eating. A walk everyday would also do me a lot of good.

I then did some research on the net and hit upon this fantastic site which I highly recommend to not only people who have high Triglycerides in their blood but to all those who want to live a healthy life. This site also opened my eyes and nailed the one single thing that I was doing for many years that had sent my triglyceride level soaring, i.e the consumption of sugar. Although I don't have a sweet tooth I was gulping litres of "pop" (Sprite, Coke, Pepsi, 7up...) every day particularly along with meals. Over the years I had also developed a strong liking for chocolates. The other bad habit was the consumption of fried items (chips, pappad, and to some extent meat). There are tons of other very vital information you can dig and those you'll be surprised about, particularly about the oils we use for cooking, the problems with wheat consumption and the misleading facts about soy. Check it out. This site is truly a Godsend.

Led Zeppelin in Chennai?

After reading about it on another Chennai blogger's blog, the news is officially out on the Saarang web page. Led Zepplica the Led Zepplin tribute band from Los Angeles will be playing at Saarang this year at I.I.T, Madras. Touted as the next closest thing to the original band I just cannot wait for the band to play "Stairway to Heaven", "Immigrant Song", "Kashmir" and tons of other hits from my No.1 rock band of all time.

At this juncture I cannot help mentioning a great band of yesteryears from Chennai who played a number of Led Zeppelin songs at rock competitions here in the city in the mid to late 80's. Being a student of the Madras Christian College rock shows and competitions weren't new to us but we never (in those days) had a band to rival Loyola College's Down Sterling. DS were simply unbeatable. I watched them twice. The first was in 1985 at the Utsav festival at Thomas Hall where they gave a concert with another band. Toto's "Rosanna" was a staple in those days and it was played to perfection. It was the first time I heard them play Led Zepp's "Stairway to Heaven". It became the crowd favourite. But that performance could hardly come close to their show at Octavia, the rock competition at Heber Hall in 1988. Even Led Zeppelin would have been moved with the way DS played their all time classic. The band with Srikanth on vocals imitating Plant and that groovy guitarist (don't know his name) playing Page's awesome guitar solo blew us all away. I am eager to watch how Led Zepplica is going to handle this number. One thing's sure. I.I.T Madras will definitely have something to talk about for sometime. Watch out for my review of the concert.

What a time to also write about the once-in-a-lifetime rock event that took place in the past at I.I.T Madras, probably the biggest ever inside a uni/college campus in India. Coming soon on my music blog.

Shaji, my ex-MCC'ian(for one year)/Madras IIT'ian friend just called from Houston, Texas yesterday morning telling me about the laser show at the Pink Floyd's concert he'd been to with his three year old son. However telling him about Led Zepplica at I.I.T, Madras for Saarang this year was the most exciting part. Was he missing something?

Greed moves America? It moves many Indians too.

By the way "Greed moves America..." was a Michael Douglas line from the movie "Wall Street". I deliberately delayed this post to avoid starting the year on a bitter note but here it is.

Chain e-mails can be fun. But many a time they are just repeats. Some need to be censored (I am referring to the highly graphic ones, more on those e-mails later), and then there are those propoganda ones, and others that are just stale, stupid and boring leading to unproductivity in the work place. But here's one that not only reflects how crass the senders of the mail are but also exposes their insatiable greed for things that are not rightfully theirs. Instead of explaining what this e-mail is all about I am reproducing my reply to the sender, everything verbatim. Read on. Although in the e-mail I have mentioned that only the current sender's email will be hidden I have given the benefit of doubt to all those who were recepients of the mail and also have hidden the address of those senders who forwarded this chain letter without writing anything (assuming they just forwarded the mail with the purpose to inform).

As I was deleting the names and email-id's I also realised that some of them have been carried away so much by the scam that they have sent these mails to several of their own personal e-mail addresses and back to the e-mail addresses of the senders of the e-mail too. Does greed have a limit for these guys?

Hello SathiMama,

Perfectly said, "A joke" indeed. Before I start the fireworks on this e-mail, I wish you a very Happy New Year, 2006.

I am also sorry that that I have to reply in this fashion but this mail is certainly not addressed to you or to those of you who have forwarded it with the intention of entertainment or to inform. But it certainly goes out to those greedy dumb asses who thought there's no risk in making some money for free by making use of company's mail servers and the conveniences that a working environment provides. These guys just didn't know how much their dignity was at stake because their names are going to be on everybody's email (as it is in this one forwarded to me) all over the world. Just about anyone to whom this mail has been forwarded could be reading it and what is sad is that most of them are Indians. Just take a look at these guys from Cognizant, Patni, TCS, Iflex, and Xansa (the list is endless) and the stuff they have written. It's a shame that these guys most of them software professionals (there are Managers in the list, and some could be Directors too) working for the so called top IT companies, most of them MNC's, have to resort to this, divulging both personal and company information (including addresses, phone and fax numbers). These guys are so obsessed with making money quick that they don't even know that there's something called the INTERNET. Most of them spend hours a day surfing the net at work for things not even remotely connected to work and yet when such a mail as this arrives they hardly search for the veracity of the statements. Why not? Because forwarding this mail to hundreds of their friends in a mailing list is easier than searching the net for the truth. Afterall if it were true then why not get their share of that free money! Little do these people know that this entire email thing is a hoax and it has been going on since the late 90's. Just take a read at the mails and you will not believe the dumbness and the greed of these pathetic folk. It's a shame on Indians who are being touted at the world's leading IT labour force. The image of the rest of us is also tarnished.

Please forward this mail to your friends so that they can stop the spread of this shameful act of greed and stupidity not knowing what a big hoax the original email is.

For more information on this email hoax check out the links below:

http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/blmsaol.htm

http://hoaxbusters.ciac.org/HBGiveAways.shtml#billgates

And these suckers need to know one more thing. I don't need free money. I know how to earn it the right way and if I do get free money I know whom to give it to and how to dispose it appropriately.

Rgds,
Subash.
P.S - I will also be posting this mail on my blog http://subashsworld.blogspot.com so that more readers can learn from this email episode and also spread the news and prevent further damage from being done. All e-mail addresses that you have forwarded to including yours will be concealed. The rest will all be exposed because if these guys were willing to expose themselves and their friends by simply forwarding such mails, then why not on my blog. I am sure this e-mail is being forwarded by someone, somewhere on this earth even as I am writing this reply.

Great weather in Chennai

After years Chennai is enjoying some very pleasant weather. Thanks to the rains this season. Imagine shopping in busy Usman Road or Ranganathan Street at midday without breaking a sweat. I see Sabarimala pilgrims wherever I go. I remember the good old days when I used to prepare for the pilgrimage to Sabarimala with my father and brother and when we had to wake up early in the morning, take bath in the cold water and head off to the temple for our prayers and "saranams". I doubt if I can be disciplined now like I used to be then. A jacket or a sweater is a must in the mornings and the evenings. Come February and March and things are going to change, and in some parts of the city the woes of the rains are far from over but in the meantime let's enjoy the good weather. What better time to enjoy Mardi Gras at I.I.T, Madras that I haven't been to in years. Did I say Mardi Gras? Those were the days before it became Saarang.
